Max the Moggie needs a new exhaust system. It'll be a bog-standard one, in mild steel (I can't afford stainless at present). I'm hoping that there will be no difference between those supplied by the usual Minor specialists. Can anyone offer any comments as to differing quality (especially regarding fit) from the various suppliers.
David Manners Group is nearest to me and convenient for collection in person.

PB, good luck with that. I have found that every exhaust if have fitted / had fitted including the most recent stainless one (and it does stain) have fouled the bulkhead apertures and needed heating at the bend where it turns up towards the manifold to correct this. We used to be able to buy front and rear sections ( and possibly tail sections If I remember rightly) separately, as the whole exhaust rarely needed replacing at the same time. I know David manners does quality bits. If you still have Max at their next open day, I will see you there!

I have found that the mild steel ones made by walker were the better ones

I had one shipped across the Atlantic for my sedan. Mild steel. I can't get the flare to fit and seal at the manifold. I've tried two different clamps with no luck. This morning I'm off to the auto parts store for some exhaust wrap with which to fashion a gasket of some sort.
Next problem is that where the pipe goes through the large rectangular hole, it contacts the lower inside corner. Rattle, rattle, rattle. Imagine having a target as large as that hole, and all you can achieve is interference at the corner.
Next problem is that the pipe behind the muffler contacts the cross member and produces another rattle.
Beyond that point, everything fits fine.
When my budget allows, I'm going to see what a custom exhaust will cost.

Even when the replacement exhausts where supplied through a genuine BMC agent the exhausts still had to be fettled to clear all the obstructions mentioned.
A good length of hardwood and a strong wrist is what is needed. A bit like that used for final adjustment of the car doors on the production line.
A good fettler is worth his weight in gold.

I find that coating the manifold flange, the exhaust front pipe flange and the clamp gripping faces with grease helps in bringing it all together at the front. It may well smoke and smell a bit that soon goes.

It's rare to get clearance through the rectangular hole at the front, as observed, the hole is big enough. Does make you wonder what car they were looking at when taking measurements
When trying to modify for better fit at this point, there is a tendency to upset other points of contact. However if left to touch the bodywork it often cracks/splits where it touches.

One thing I can confirm is that the mild steel LCB from Maniflow is a perfect fit and no issues with the aperture. The rest of the large bore system which I bought elsewhere was not a good fit.

Maniflow back-box is super tight with the fuel tank though. Took some precise fitting but I suppose that's the case with all large bore back-boxes.

It’s the same with their small bore system too. Though as Declan says, I also found the LCB from Maniflow is an excellent fit.
