What is the current wisdom on the best oil to use with a recon engines? It usually seems to be standard 20/50 classic oil but are there any recent advances that would be worth using? Thanks, John

Any good quality 20/50 multigrade. If you've just psent money on a recon then avoid the cheaper oils, they're fine for an older engine, but you want to get the best from your recon unit. Morris Oils do a nice one, and just relaunched is Duckhams Q which was used to fill the engines in the factory, and avdertised as "the engine's choice".

As above - a good quality 20/50 should do the trick. There is absolutely no need for fancy additives.

The only additive that needs to be put to the engine is engine build lube on the cam lobes, journals/bearings and anywhere that has metal to metal contact so that the engine has some lubrication before the oil pressure gets all around the engine.
Prime the oil pump before turning over the engine either through the priming plug or through the block union for the oil filter feed pipe.
Leave the plugs out until you have oil pressure plus 30 secs so as to keep the load off the journals and bearings.

Do not labour or over rev the engine for at least the first 500 miles - treat the engine with kid gloves and it will last for many miles.
Add Redex to the fuel as it will help keep the valve stems lubricated and pistons & rings free of carbon.

I've used Penite HPR 30 for a long time and it seems to work well.

you can get a running in oil from millers and penright , comma oils do a decent 20/50
