hi can anyone tell me how I can identify the size of an engine as I have just picked up a gold seal engine & gearbox and the previous owner is uncertain of the size .
I have took this set of numbers of the top of the head B(OR8)G ES 8435 it came out of a 58, but it is a recon.

LO, 8G is the prefix for ALL sizes of factory reconned Gold Seal
engines. If you are lucky there will be a small plate affixed to the
stud which holds the breather tube on the front tappet cover which
is underneath the exhaust manifold just to the rear of the front
engine mounting plate. It will have '1100' etc on it.

sorry to but in, ive done comp test on splitty engine today ,average 50-75psi, not much improvment with oil in bores, but looking at what u say above willie the engine in the trav has a plate below t.chest with 1100 on it, the rocker assembly looks new,and is not standard, the slotted adjuster screws and locknuts are unused /had no use, also oddly the thermostat mount area is larger than my other two engines, AND FINALLY NO WEE BYPASS HOSE UNDER THERMO,could this be a recon mate , 10D U/H 110971, cheers steve, PICS ON WEBLINK

STEVE, I think I said before that 10D.....is an engine from an
Austin A40 MK2 of 1098cc. I have no idea about the lack of
a by-pass hose I'm afraid. If the 'oil in the bores' check doesn't
make a lot of difference then perhaps you are lucky in that it
points more towards faulty valves OR perhaps the wrong head
i.e. the wrong combustion chamber capacity?? If you observe
the head casting number it will give something definite to check
up on. The 'H' in the engine number means high compression
so you are certainly not in that league with those readings.

No oil in bores cure to compression- as Willie says it sounds like a head problem (relatively easy fix), possibly VSR or burnt out valves. blame the EEC for banning cheap leaded 4-star
off with its head! ;) While your at it- (when the missus relaxes the purse strings ;) ) a recon lead free head is a good idea if the bottom end of the engine is sound.

HIJACKERS!
DON'T YOU RECOGNISE A OWNER IN TROUBLE?
Eh-hem.
Right, assuming the people that reconditioned the unit as a gold seal engine knew what they were doing then probably the easiest way to find out what you have is to take a look at the code cast on the cylinder head.
Remove the rocker cover and look at the centre of the head. there are numbers in two places. if one of them is 12G202 it's a 1098cc engine. 12G240 would be a 1275cc. I'm not sure what the 948cc engine should be.
