The timing chain cover fitted to a BMC 948cc engine should have a flat front face but invariably the front face ends up lightly dished.
Is there any particular reason you ask?

I can only put it down to the constant expansion and contraction of the metal and that there is no support either inside or outside to stop it doing so.
The later 'A' plus engine timing chain cover had a split level front face and therefore the front faces do not appear to distort or go concave
If it is of concern - knock the timing chain front cover flat again before painting.
