rust

Hiya all,can anyone recommend a quality rust treatment for light surface rust?I have used kurust but the problem returns after a short while.All the best.

If its light surface rust, then the best thing to do is remove it as completely before painting. Use a wire brush on a grinder or drill and get it down to shiny metal, then use a rust REMOVER such as Jenolite. Clean this off to remove last traces of rust and use a good quality Zinc primer (I used to get Unidox in 1.0L from Mr Grumpys). This paint along with another zinc rich paint tested by practical classics several years ago passed their 6 months salt spray test.

None of the rust converters managed this.

Then, if on a visible outer panel, rub down smooth, etch prime, fill prime, rubbing down to give a smooth finish before top coat.

hmmm the jenolite I just bought online isnt a remover it's a convertor- do they do other rust treatment under the Jenolite name then?

chief, if its the black bottle with red cap and purple jelly its the best stuff u can get mate ,it works really well,scrape off rust, rotary wire brush then jeno,steve

Yes, the stuff Steve mentions is a remover, or the bottles I bought were anyway.

That's certainly the same stuff, what made me think it was a convertor was it saying that it converts into "a stable compund" which sounded like Kurusts rust convertor. On re-reading the label it suggests you wipe off this compound and it reveals bare metal, is that correct?

i dont wipe it off mate , nor do i put it on thick enough to wipe off,use it ,love it :lol: ,steve

I think, that being strong phosphoric acid in a gel form, that Jenolite is so good because its both a remover and converter. So the rust that is not dissolved by the acid and wiped off is converted to a stable Iron Phosphate.

There's a nasty patch of rust under and around the windscreen rubber of mum's Mini - the cosmetics don't matter, we just want it stabilised. Will a rust converter damage the screen rubber?

It would be easier and longer lasting to take the screen out and thoroughly clean the lip of rust for a long term solution, dont break it though! ;)

although if its an old banger mini rather than a cherished classic, then just use some rust converter, if you rub down well it should last a couple of years before bubbling through again.

It's a cherished banger! The bodywork is solid but way past cosmetic best. We've had it since new though and wouldn't want any harm.

I'll use the converter for now, and next time the screen gets chipped give it the proper treatment.

I've used Kurust in the past and I leave it on for 15 minutes before cleaning off with a cloth and kitchen towel. I very much doubt that it will harm the windscreen rubber as long as it is properly cleaned off after use.

If you fiind and use Jenolite I advise you dont get it wet ( it rained while I was using it :( )
I now have yellow/white metal (the yellow is the colour people describe their radiator mayonaise as). Looks absolutely dreadful, same rain also managed to make streaks on my nice smooth primed front panel. I'm hoping for better luck today. Thankfully I had the fortune of being outside when it was raining which meant things could have been worse.

jenolite? I've been using hammerite red oxide on any rusty spots on the underneath of the car, would jenolite be prefferable?
