Clutch

Hi guys,
I have a 1956 Series 2 with the original drivetrain.
Last weekend I was going to a Morris Minor rally and my clutch pedal went flat to the floor.
Having crawled underneath I found the rod-- pedal to relay ( part number ACA5002) had snapped at one end.
I called around last week and found the part is no longer available so I decided to make a new one myself from 1/4 inch steel rod, per the original. Based on the original part, I could deduce that the total length of the rod should be 4 inches, which I copied.
I went to fit it today. First I slackened off the clutch adjustment nut all the way. Despite this I find it difficult to fit the rod without partially actuating the clutch. Is this normal? Does anyone know what the correct length of this rod should be? Seems to me it would need to be about 5inches so as not to partially actuate the clutch. I'm wondering if this was why the rod snapped in the first place-- maybe it was too stressed?
I've attached a photo of the old and new part.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers
Mark

When the end of the rod was bent stress was introduced into the rod and that is the root cause of the fracture and ultimate breakage.

The rod Pt No: ACA5002 is available from MOSS. Item No: 41 in the link below.

Latterly the rod was replaced with two flat plates (items No: 45) and two clevis pins (items No: 46). See the MOSS link above.

The hole centres in the two plates are the same length as the rod.

The adjustable rod on my 1971 van broke today and had to be recovered home. Luckily I had a spare and did not take long to fit and the clutch engages better now than it ever did. I'm with Footman James insurance and I used their recovery and they turned up within half an hour :D
