As a guide, 4-door deluxe saloon cost £656 in 1968 (add on purchase tax at 20%)

Purchase tax wouldn't have been in addition to £656 in 1968. I still have a Morris price list from late 1965 and the list price for a 2door Minor saloon was then £426.00 plus purchase tax of £90.6.3 giving a total of £516.6.3.
A 4door deluxe was at that time was a heady £574.10.4 for those lucky enough to afford one!

In September 1974 I bought my first car. Had to because my post university job with the Coal Board required it. They gave me 3 months to learn to drive.
A 1971 mini 1000 in a fashionable shade of beige...36k miles, £495.
It was fun when it worked, which appeared to be completely random. Traded it in 3 years later for a 1200 Beetle. That was a disaster too.
40 odd years later I'm still using Morris and air cooled VW's as daily transport. I'm not a quick learner.

@SteveClem, I have the same thing going on, I think those cars we took for granted years ago bought us happy memories so we keep the cars as they are part of it, I still have a love of beetles and BMC cars nothing will replace them, New cars just do not have the same affect.

They were an integral part of the landscape. Rounder, slower, kinder even than the speed and cruelty of the modern world. Okay much less comfortable and efficient, but somehow, more appropriate and on a more human scale.

And my usual weekly petrol to about half fill my Morris Minor tank required the sum of Ten Shillings in the early 1960,s
(Thats 50p in todays money )
The pump attendant would always also ask if my engine oil needed checking after dispensing the fuel for me . He then proceeded to clean my windscreen.

Having filled up , often asked if you wanted ' any shots ' . Totally different meaning these days !!!!!

Happy days! I was 17 in 1978. Bringing home apprentice wages of around £18.30 a week. Drove a '51 Austin A40 Devon with column change. Cost me £90 and had been taken as p/x at my uncle's garage in Croydon ('If you weren't family I'd be asking £110 for it')! I'd put in 3 gallons of petrol a week at around 77p a gallon. My wages crept up to a heady £19.20 a week, and petrol to 82p a gallon. No forecourt attendant service though

My first car was a 1935 Austin Ruby . As an apprentice in 1962 I was earning £3:10 a week. Ran the car , gave my parents something for keep , and even went out ! Wish I still had the Ruby !!!!!!!
