After 20 years of looking at the collapsed cardboard mess behind the glove box doors I've bought a new one but can't work out how it's supposed to be fitted. There are two holes each side on the bottom- I imagine they lone up with the door hinges, and one each side on top but no corresponding holes in the dash recess. Also don't know if the dash recess sits inside or outside the liners. Does any one have a good photo or diagram, please?

Do not think I have ever seen a workshop-manual diagram dealing with the cardboard glovebox inserts.

Your new one may suit a later car, which had a fitting at middle-speedo-height either side to take a stay for the glovebox lid. There was also a bent steel angle piece (similar to two opposite arms of a swastika!) giving support to the cardboard at the back.
Yes, the cardboard front lip fits around the metal aperture, so that the cut (and potentially fraying edge of the cardboard) is out of sight of the passengers.

I don't believe that the inserts ever changed - sidewise. Looking at my 57 4 door, the self tapping screws which hold the glove box doors to the apertures also serve to locate the glove box liner, through metal clips as they go through into the bulkhead.

The hole in the side of the glove box is supposed to allow you to slacken the speedo screws without taking them out. The glove box innards is thereafter held on place by tension - or a bit of glue on the upper / top side of the inside of the aperture (late ones had a magnetic catch screwed through into the lining ) and the split in the top of the inner liner is there for fettling and installation.

Hope this helps. I think one post suggests putting some foam under the glove box inner to keep it in place (at least while the glue is drying)
this will stop it sagging.

That gives me a much better idea but doesn't explain why the old liner as well as the replacement have a whole in the top edge st both left and right hand sides.

Photos would help, but it may be the mounting hole for the magnetic catch on later models. The inners these days have to cater for the whole model range - As below images

Interesting, but no, there's no mounting jokes for the later magnetic catch. I got my new liner from ESM whose pre ' 62 liners look identical to my original, complete with an upper hole on each side which corresponds to the brass coloured self tapper clip on the top left side of the liner n your photo.

I am fairly sure there are no tabs or screws in the upper glove box aperture, but when I am in the garage next I will have a look

If you have a look at this parts list from CW there are differences between the post 64 boxes (13) and those inners fitted before that. The former have fixing holes at the top as well as at the bottom. The latter (12) only at the bottom.

Thanks for all your information, firedrake1942. I've a much better idea of how it's supposed to go together now. First, though I've got to stop water dribbling in from the wiper wheel box which will ruin the new glovebox liner.

While trying to best seal the wheelbox fitting from rain + runoff from the windscreen, I also varnish the outer top of the raw cardboard to give it some water resistance. Has worked well.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I've now fitted the drivers side liner and what a difference it makes. Also stuck some politeness to the top for some extra protection. Must now get on to the passenger side box.

On another topic..... Looking at your steering wheel boss, to reduce massively / get rid of entirely the crazing in the plastic. soak it overnight, upside down in Olive oil. Seriously, it works.....
