Both my rear oil seals have been leaking so will need replacing. May as well do the bearings while I'm at it. I have the early type MM split Case rear axle. Any tips on removing the half shafts and bearings? Manual recommends a special tool, what should I use? Slide Hammer? also, how to remove the split collar without damage and how to get the bearings on and off the half shaft once out. Pics attached. Cheers

That is exactly the same axle set-up as on my MG TD and the lads on the T-Series forum have documented this procedure very well with photos. The workshop manual description is not detailed enough.

You will require the slide hammer which you can make up yourself-see mine below which is made from an M10 tensile bolt and a chunk of metal as the slide+adapter to axle thread.
As far as I know you will need a BSF/M10 adapter to fit your axle. Both half shafts have a right hand thread.
Some get away without the slide hammer by tapping the bearing housing free, then using the drum as a slide hammer. I am not advocating this method.

Sounds like getting the bearing off the half shaft is quite difficult. I may just leave the ones on there. I'm not aware of any noise from them

A bearing puller like this should do it.
Some of the guys use a sealed bearing and this further reduces the risk of oil leaks.

But where's the rest of the shaft?? Is there a hole on the bench?? Bit confused

I might just end up taking the shafts to a local garage and getting them to replace the bearings with a press.

That is just a photo showing how to remove a differential pinion bearing for reference-just to illustrate what type puller you could use. That is not a half shaft and there is no hole in the bench-at least the last time I looked.
