Oil filter plate - top or bottom?

This is the first time I've changed the oil filter. Unfortunately, the old filter and plate dropped off before I could get a look--does the plate go above or below the filter element?
Thanks!

The plate goes under the filter with a spring underneath it pushing the filter up. Make sure you have the spring aswell otherwise the oil will bypass the filter.

Also make sure that the plate is the right way up.
The centre of the plate should be convex up.
Under the plate is a felt washer and then a flat washer and then the spring - see exploded diagram below:-

If you are not particular about originality fitting the canister oil filter conversion is a much better option.

The filter head can be found also S/H on 'e' bay.

Thanks all. I think I've done it right now.
