Grrrrr. Nuff said??

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Surely there must be some better nuts available? Didn't the GPO vans have ones that didn't strip the threads out? 4 out of 16 today.

Assuming the nuts have not been overtightened in the past, and tightened to spec (37-39ft lb) the threads will hold up.
Gpo nuts were just double ended.

Hmmmm. When I bought it there were 4 brand new tyres put on it. I guess that they used a windy gun for them. Might be worth me getting the lathe out for a session. 3/8 UNF, aren't they?

Yes those air guns are a killer, I'm not sure of the thread size but if pressed would agree with 3/8 unf.

Definitely 3/8" UNF. With new nuts, NO air guns and manually up to 45 lbf. ft. torque is fine.
