Has anyone worked out a way to check wear in trunnions and track rod ends singlehandedly?
Actually, given that pre-1960 cars are now MoT exempt, it would make a useful post to help owners to check their cars if anyone would like to spell out what’s involved!
I know testing lower trunnions involves reducing the weight and tension on them while levering under the tyre and watching for movement.
However, in the absence of an assistant to rock the steering wheel, I’m struggling to check my rod ends!
Suggestions please!

Very timely question.I have just had an MoT inspection, and tester showed me the small amount of "play" on my n/s top trunnion by rocking the wheel with the weight taken off by central jack. Gave me an "advisory" as he knows that I will remedy this immediately, which I have.
I assume the same method for track rod ends?

As regards wear in the track rod ends - pulling or pressing down on the track rod end should show up any wear.
If the body of the track rod end moves up and down the track rod end is worn and should be replaced.
