Tracking

Post by Dave H »

While doing some routine maintenance recently, I noticed that the outside tread on both front wheels was almost completely riven off. Since buying the car (a 1968 snowberry white convertible) from a reputable specialist business I've only done 2,500 miles. I'm amazed that the problem was missed at the last MOT in October last year. My question is will re-tracking cure the problem? I should add that the car steers perfectly and pulls up under braking perfectly straight.

Whilst you may only have done 2500 since the last MOT I would suggest a general condition survey of the front suspension (& front suspension body mounts) should be undertaken before having the tracking done.
If the tyres are worn equally there is no reason that the car should not steer perfectly and brake in a straight line.
If there is nothing untoward with the front suspension etc. - setting the tracking to the correct toe in (3/32") should cure the problem - though your two front tyres may need to be replaced dependent upon how much tread has worn off the outer edge of the tyre.
