Prop shaft? How to line it up?

Post by morrella1967 »

Hi,

When driving my minor the steering wheel begins to judder/vibate rather uncomfortably when it reach about 40mph, could this be the prop shaft? Is it a simple case of spinning it round and trying to see if it's balanced?

I'd be most greatful for your thoughts

Sounds more like wheel balance. The prop is not connected in any way to the steering. Unless damaged the prop is balanced to rotate without vibration. If the wheels are balanced then the wheel bearings could be worn out.

Judder with the front wheels is more than likely that they are out of balance.
A quick and simple check is to jack each front wheel clear of the ground and see if there are any heavy spots. If there are the wheel will rotate until the heavy spot is at the bottom.
If there are heavy spots at static the wheels will need to be balanced.
If the propshaft is effected i.e. out of balance the vibration would be felt through the transmission / gear lever.
