Nothing unique but I thought I'd share. After two weeks of debating whether or not to hide behind the 'privilege' of MOT exemption, commonsense prevailed so I had the Moggie tested today... and it passed!!! Rather non-specific advisory for 'oil leak' which it transpires is simply the rocker cover gasket. Well chuffed!!

Is 'oil leak' a fault?

I thought it was a designed-in anticorrosion feature on the mog.

I entirely agree Brian. If only it could be channelled into box sections etc where it wouldn't go to waste...

The built-in anti-corrosion leak was the back main bearing. It undersealed mine completely!

Good for you for making sure all is well with the car safety wise even though you didn't have to. I'd have done exactly the same and wouldn't dream of buying a mot exempt car without an up to date mot certificate.

Well done for getting it tested. I've just tested a customers '55 saloon which he agreed was a good idea. Tester spotted a petrol seep from where the outlet pipe joins the tank. Tightening the union cured it, but not easy to spot when the car wasn't on a ramp. Also the car had only done about 60 miles since last years test, so surprising how some faults can start...

Another local person recently bought a Minor for everyday use and found a 59 saloon. I suggested he got it tested, and he said he would after he got it home, which wasn't really what I meant. I was suggesting the vendor got it tested so he'd had an inspection of what he was buying but I think it was too late then... Anyway, I've never seen such badly patched and bodged chassis legs. One needed replacing immediately, the other not too far behind. The centre crossmember had been repaired with angle iron and the sills had been plated over.
This wasn't a particularly cheap car and he was understandably upset by the news. He relisted it on ebay with the phrase 'needs some welding' (which was a lot more honest than the previous owner) and got nearly as much for it again from someone else who didn't inspect it or ask for it to be MOT tested.
Is it just me or has the world gone mad...

I'd never by a test-exempt car without a recent new ticket. I'm dustrustful enough of second hand moderns with 'new tickets' on them!
Underside of the car was my main concern. I didn't get a REALLY good look at it before buying last year and I've not had time or space until now to do much with it. Tester let me get under it on the ramp this week. Very pleased to find pukka repair sections. All really clean and no bodges or tacked-on patches to be seen. Gave me added peace of mind
