Well as mentioned in the 'Confusion' thread I've got the old thing running now but that's not the end of the story. With the headlights on the full beam warning light is on regardless of how many times I click the floor switch (whick does click nicely underfoot and doesn't feel broken). Also the red dashboard charging light won't go out.
I'm happy that all the wires are sound and in place now but I did fiddle with the control box - I removed, cleaned the contacts and replaced the adjustable screws on the two coil unit gismos in the control box.
Could it be that one or both of these are not operating and allowing the dynamo to charge? Or could there be a common fault on the back of the speedo that is causing both lights to illuminate?

Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

Hello Peetee,
I take it that the headlights actually go from dip to main beam, and that the main beam indicator goes out when you switch the headlights off.
Then the feed to the indicator must be connected to the blue feed from the light switch rather than the blue\white output of the dip switch.
It also sounds as though you will now need to set up your control box as you have disturbed the adjustments, or replace it with an exchange unit.
