morris minor 1956 spilt screen

Hi, i have just acquired a 1956 morris minor saloon split screen can any one tell me when fitting a new headlining does the front screen need to be removed as well as the small rear window. many thanks Ray

Hi Ray. Just had a look at my 1956 split-screen 4-door. It doesn't look as if the front screen needs to be disturbed. The workshop manual makes no mention of it either. If I'm wrong I'm sure somebody will be along soon to correct me

not an easy job,to get a good tight finish..... however, The front is stapled to a wooden former,Dont damage it they as unavailable new. this is located across the front of the frame above the screen(You don't touch the screen),it is held in place by two clips one each side,which when the former is pushed under the frame ,clip under the edge of the frame to hold it in. The problem is first finding the clips,and then releasing them from the frame,(Easy to refit since you just push the former in and they lock automatically) Do a search since a few posts on how to make a tool with a spoon to find and release the clips, With mine I gave up,and did this........ slide a knife along the frame,between the headliner and metal until you hit the edge of the clip,then with a tiny drill bit ,drill a hole under the clip so that you can push a pin up to release the clip. Then the front former can be pulled out.........The problem you will have is that the new headlining is not an exact size,so you need to keep the original fitted to the former and measure it so that the new one can be re stapled in the correct position . So don't do as I did on the first one and cut the headlining to get at the former..Then refit . After refitting I used a hair dryer to shrink the lining to get it tight.... Good luck you will need it
