Good News! After some five years and a lot of problems, my Traveller passed its MoT last Thursday and is now back on the road. Hurrah.

Bad news. Drove it straight from the garage that carried out the work to get it through the MoT to the nearest petrol station, only to discover that the fuel tank once filled has more in common with a sieve than a container for holding fluids. Therefore I need a new fuel tank.

However, fuel tanks seem to be in very scarce at the moment, with none of the 'main' suppliers (ESM, Bull Motif, Charles Ware) having any in stock. In fairness, I can get a 'Heritage' tank quite easily, but it is way more expensive than a pattern version. I'm not that desperate for historical accuracy.

Is anyone aware of any particular problems in sourcing tanks at the moment?

Repair is always a possibility depending on how bad it is but it has to be made safe first and can be very expensive.

There is this one on fleabay £60,00. I have seen worse.

I you have filled up is it possible that its just leaking from the gasket around the sender unit? The sender is at a lower part of the tank than when full, if that makes sense!

I have a good one, if you're interested - but its from a SII so only holds five gallons..........

Five gallons! Good enough to go 150 miles or so, I imagine...

I'm going to have a look at the tank at the weekend. I have ordered a new filler hose, shroud, clips etc, but didn't think about the gasket around the sender. I'll check it over.

I saw previous comments about classicvehiclesandparts, but thought I would try the email just in case; as I expected, the address was rejected. Regarding the tank on Ebay, would a saloon tank fit a Traveller?

As far as I am aware saloons and travellers shared the tanks. 5 gallon and larger can be fitted as well it was only the depth (upper bulge that differed).

The Ebay tank looks good (can't get into the Gumtree at the moment, for some reason), but Senior Management thinks I should stick out for a new one.

I would buy a new one as second hand may have pinholes and leak in the near future

I saw this tank re-new kit on rustbuster, was thinking of giving it a go. I don't want to put a larger tank in and finding a new pattern one, as the OP says, is a bit troublesome.

I have used rustbusters petrol tank treatment on an a35 and it worked for me

I inspected the tank today and there is clear evidence that it's the gasket that has failed rather than the tank itself being the source of the leak. I've ordered another gasket this afternoon, but have also replaced the filler hose and clips. The old one didn't seem too bad actually, but there was no harm in replacing it. Whilst I was at it, I replaced the fuel hose between the pump and the carb, installing a filter at the same time (there wasn't one previously). Little jobs, but they all make a difference.

Thanks Les. If it wasn't for the fact that we are planning to move house shortly, I'd put a bid in on that. However, the less stuff I have to move/put into storage, the better, but I've added it to my 'Watch list' just in case I change my mind!
