interchangeable engines?

My 1958 948cc saloon's engine is on it's last legs, methinks.

I have a good 1098 engine (and gearbox) rebuilt 5000 miles ago only.

Can these engines be swapped over without modification to the mounts etc?
Can I do just the engine or the gearbox as well. I even have a 1098 drive shaft if they are different.

You expertise and knowledge would be appreciated.
Thanks
Nick

use the back plate from the engine to match the gearbox. so use 948 back plate on the 1098 engine. use the 948 clutch.

Easiest and best way - just replace the 948 engine and its box with the 1098 engine with its box. Straight swap..... :D

I can "easily" change a 1098 gearbox and engine for the 948.
Is the drive shaft the same?

Driveshaft/prop shaft is the same. You may want to consider fitting a 1098 (4.22) diff as well. It will accelerate well with the 948 (4.55) diff but the engine will be a bit thrashy at top speeds.......
You also might consider fitting the larger 8" front brake drums, and shoes, if you still have 7" ones fitted in front, to give better braking with the larger engine's increased power.

Well, I don't think I need to change the engine. After lots of faffing, I decided to whip the head off today. I found that only 3/4 of one of the exhaust valves was present. No wonders it's been feeling a little lack lustre.

How common is it that valves disintegrate?
Where on earth did the bit go? I didn't fine it.

Engine much better now.

Thanks.

hopefully it went out of the exhaust pipe the unleaded fuel burns much hotter than the old 4 star and if the head has not been converted to unleaded then the valves can burn out glad your sorted

Thanks - but to be fair it was an unleaded head, perhaps 15000 miles ago.
From a well know internet seller and own website.
Also had valve springs break on this head.
Not sure about the quality of this restoration on the head.

Lucky I had a spare valve.
It's soooo much better.
