Having just arrived in The Gambia, I realise I should have posted this earlier. If you're interested in how a nearly standard 948cc 1962 saloon can cope with extreme heat, vast distances, and terrible roads then you can see updates from my journey here:

Brilliant this has got to be one for a wider audience in Minor Matters. How did the tyre under the bonnet perform? lots of debate in posts on the form on the wisdom of this. Any modifications ?

Yes I think I will write something for minor matters. My article about the trip to Istanbul a few years ago was well received.
The spare wheel under the bonnet has been fine so far. I have read all the discussions about it and having tried mounting it on the boot lid without success, I decided to go with the under bonnet solution for the trip and just put it back in the boot when I'm back.
That was the only real modification that I made, other than an auxiliary electric fan, which broke on the terrible Mauritanian roads, causing the engine to overheat and blow the head gasket. That was a fun roadside repair in 40C+ heat!
