Just back from a long weekend visiting this fantastic place. In the big boat shed where they repair the smaller vessels I noticed a very nice maroon pickup,partly covered by tarpaulin. Couldn't find anyone who knew anything about it though.

Portsmouth is a great place to visit.i'm a Pompey boy originally..and still go down there most fridays,sailing over to the Island

heading down to the iow in the morning..hope to catch a view of the giant US aircraft carrier,before it departs the Solent.

I spent 6 months at Portsmouth Polytechnic. A truly miserable time of my life. Escaped in the Minor I bought while there!

I did my Masters degree there! luckily by distance learning although it required several residential stays. - depressing place. I I supposed it got bombed to smithereens and then the well meaning architects put up all that post-war brutalist architecture

Sadly allot of our great cities got a pasting by the Germans during the war and we lost allot of great historic buildings because of them.
I believe Coventry was once a beautiful Medieval city and one of this countries best preserved.
Look at it now................... I believe it is the dictionary definition of depressing.....
I heard that Hitler / the Luftwaffe used an old tourist guide to Britain when choosing targets of cultural significance, perhaps someone on here will know more.

You are right they were called the Baedeker raids !

Well we can't turn the clock back,and it's good that the historical dockyard survived mostly intact....it's a must do for anyone who loves this country's heritage. Shame that the planners in Coventry decided to replace the City as they did, but the benefit of hindsight....

Nice place Portsmouth and lots of maritime history well worth a visit

If you are into that sort of thing try also the Chatham Dockyard and ropey as well as the Great Eastern in Bristol Well worth it esp if down at Charlie Ware's.

As I said, it wasn't all bad, I just didn't fit in. If I hadn't gone I wouldn't have bought my '55 which I ran for years till family came along. Only car I ever gave a name to, so many adventures.

Just hearsay. Confirmed by an RAF bomber command Report in February 1942 that stated that less than 5% of bombs dropped on Germany at the time fell within 10km of their intended target. So do not be fooled into thinking that the Luftwaffe were any better. This in turn prompted "Bomber" Harris to instigate the area bombing offensive so effective in destroying all the main german cities but doing Little to stem war production. But as Henning Wehn puts it

" I am glad we lost WWII - you destroyed our cities and we rebuilt them again...................properly!

Gloucester Docks are well worth a visit.

Yes, don't be fooled by the Cathedral & Docks, latter being invaded by Multiplex Cinema's, designer shop's & cafe's!

Whetherspoons there too, long for a few Dornier's & Junker's 88's!!!
