Rear damper link arm to chassis

I've just refitted my rear axle and springs, and I've left everything untightened until it goes back on its wheels as per usual advice. Looking at the link arms, though, if the taper connection are left loose till then, won't that mean the damper arm travel will be limited? Should the damper arm be moved to mid travel before the final tightening?

" Finger tightening " of suspension nuts / bolts , with proper tightening ( to torque spec if available for the part ) following , once back on the ground , is the way to go. You don't want it loose , to make up it's own mind where it goes at the start ! At least give it a clue.
With regard to the link arm specifically the position to finally tighten is the " at rest " position, Only start worrying if the " at rest " position is at the top most arc of the lever arm sweep. Half way / mid position is normal. Top position of the arm sweep would indicate knackered road springs and / or duff dampers.

Thanks - "at rest" sounds sensible. All new springs, pins and bushes and damper resistance stiff and smooth, so hopefully no problems there. I'll see how it looks when I get some tyres on my wheels and sit it on the ground at the end of the week.
