Will a smooth gearbox fit my 1962 1000 minor, or do I have to stay with a fended box

Depends which engine you have. In 1962 they swapped the 948 engine for the 1098. I'm assuming yours is a 1098 because of how your query is phrased. To fit a smooth case (948) gearbox to a 1098 engine will require the flywheel and clutch from a 948 car, unless you want to start milling out the bellhousing to take the 1098 flywheel/clutch. The bigger engine will shorten the life of the smooth case gearbox, so I would get a 1098 ribbed gearbox if you can. It will make life so much simpler!
