Engine numbers

Post by Mark Wilson »

I acquired my Midget 1275 engine with its engine number tag missing. It's a thick flange 1275 so fairly certain it's a 12CE prefix. During my rebuild I've found the number 14172 stamped on the rear engine plate, the flywheel and the crankshaft flange. Is this likely to be the missing part of the engine number?

The number on the crankshaft flange was particularly interesting - the crankshaft is an EN40B, which some have expressed doubts about ever being fitted to the thick flange blocks, so I had wondered if it had been fitted later in the engine's life. The matching stamped numbers seem to indicate that it was in fact original.
