temp gauge

can anyone tell me how to fit a new temp gauge to my car, mercury type? Not sure how its fixed to the head. Thanks.

There should be a large nut in the side of the head under the
thermostat housing. It is a taper thread (there is no washer)
if you have the correct sender unit on your instrument then it
should screw in straight away. As you have the 'pipe''type
be very careful to route it so that there is no strain on the pipe,
there should be a couple of coils in the pipe to allow for the
movement of the engine.

Okay, i have one fitted at the moment, but am not sure exactly how to remove it, it looks as though it has been bodged in and so i don't want to damage the head on removal. Any ideas where i could get a mecury gauge? or possibly how to fit an electical one in the same place would be great. (cars in for its 1st M.O.T at the moment, after 2years worth of work, wish it luck!!)

I would favour an electrical one as the Mercury type is prone to
fracture. I obtained the gauge and sender from a Mini. The sender
unit fits in the same place,under the theromstat housing, and forms
the 'Earth' side of the circuit. The live feed to the gauge should be
taken from the Voltage stabiliser which is on the rear of the speedo
and this feed should be connected to the LIGHT GREEN wire.

that sounds like an excellent idea, although does the live feed have to come from the speedo, why not a different one?

Because the live supply from the voltage stabiliser via the light
green wire gives a constant voltage independent of engine speed
etc. thus giving a more reliable reading on the gauge.

Reluctant to take the speedo out, I bought a voltage stabiliser (second hand) from ESM. I've mounted (earthed) it on the bulkhead, and my temp gauge is wired to it. Works fine.

Joe, did it matter which way round you wired the stabiliser? or are they terminal specific?
