I am about to refit the sump the old gasket was plastic I have new cork ones soaking in oil ready to trim off to size and fit , my querie is the block were the gasket abuts has three very narrow beads of what looks like black silicone sealant parts of which are missing do I remove the rest and then fit the gasket as normal

Hi Declan. I have had a look at the posts previously but what I need to know is should wether you are fitting plastic or cork should there be any lines of rubber sealant on the block side i.e. The face where the sump gasket fits up too

Whether you use the plastic/rubber or cork gaskets at the sump ends or paper gaskets on the block to sump sides there is absolutely no need if assembled correctly for gasket go/sealant. Just a smear of general purpose grease on all gasket/seal faces.
I would recommend that you clean off all the gasket goo/sealant and just assemble.
If it is done right there will be no leaks or weeps.
I never use gasket goo/sealant unless the manufacturer states it should be used - BMC did not recommend its use nor use it on initial engine assembly.

Thanks for all your replies I now realise what I was looking at was old gasket goo used by the previous engine builder I. I have now removed th goo and cleaned it up

I totally agree, with 2 exceptions:

On the flat gaskets between the sump and the block, I use blue Hylomar on the side of the gasket facing the sump pan - the surface was not absolutely flat when new, so after a few on's and off's, I think it might need a little help. A smear of grease on the gaskets facing the block.

Same applies to the rocker cover - blue Hylomar on the side of the gasket facing the cover, and a smear of grease on the side facing the head.

Other than that, no 'gasket goo', just a smear of grease on both sides of other gaskets helps them bed down, and makes it MUCH easier to remove if the time comes to do so.
