Speedo drive

Post by JiimyO »

Hi all, the speedo cable would not come out the Drive pinion in the gearbox..Even after soaking it for 2 days...the pinion shaft came out of the gearbox leaving the plastic cog inside the gearbox..I've just bought another speedo drive pinion..what is the best option for reinstalling this? bearing in mind the plastic cog is still in the gearbox>>>Thanks for your help..Jimmy[frame]Image[/frame]

The first thing must be to get the old cog out, you certainly do not want to have it floating around in there! Once that's done, the new shaft just slots in, using a slight twist to engage the cog.

I agree with simmitc. You need a slightly hooked pick to delve into the depths because the plastic pinion will have to be twisted slightly as you extract. Bright torch / LED and small mirror to see inside.
If you don't have a suitable pick then " chop up " a wire coat hanger with a hacksaw. Put a small right angle bend in it leaving 5 mm as the "hook ". Put the short end in the vice and lever with the long end , hammering it down for the last bit. After a straight 10 /15 cm , bend a triangle shaped " handle " at the other end.
Armed with this you can go fishing. Trying easing it out with the hook pointing upwards , pressure upwards so that when it disengages from the spiral gear, you can carefully lift it out.
