Sierra Type 9 5 speed box is grating in 2nd gear. It doesn't jump
out of 2nd, so I suspect it is synchro. Would I be right in thinking
that it is the synchro that has gone?
What would be the rough cost of repair, and any recommendations
where I could get it done?
I would dearly appreciate quick response.

Don't claim to be an expert, but I have one of these in my MG TD. What do you mean by grating? Do you mean it crunches when changing up into 2nd (or down)? If so, could be the syncro. Is your clutch properly adjusted? As a pure guess, I'd have thought £500 or so if you include removal and refitting. Many years ago my MGB gearbox crunched when changing down from 3rd to 2nd, which is a known fault on these. I just lived with it until I learned how to double declutch.

I would think about £800. I doubt if having your gearbox repaired would work out much cheaper.

The Ebay box is plus VAT as well ! Plus labour , oil ,maybe a clutch ?

Try changing the oil first. Type 9 boxes can be sensitive to the type of oil used. Try changing to a synthetic oil to see if it cures the problem.

Ford part number for the recommended oil to be used is quoted.

Do you know what oil is in it? Is the grating when cold, or all the time?

The recommended grade is a semi-synthetic 75W/90 - something like Castrol Universal 75W/90.

I use Redline MT-90-75W90-GL in the Type 9 gearbox in the TD. Our American friends swear by it.

Liz,
Changing the oil is no easy job as the standard type 9 gearbox does not have a drain plug at the bottom. You have to either access through the filler plug on the LHS of the box or remove the gearbox top cover to pump/suck out the old oil.

Not sure about that - I have two type 9 Sierra boxes and both have drain plugs at the bottom. The pain is the filler plug on the side that doesn't line up with an access hole on the Minor gearbox cover, and has to be filled by squeezing or pumping oil from underneath the car. However, we need to hear back from Liz: Is the crunching when changing into second or continuously when running in second? As a short term solution you may be better to miss second completely and go from first to third and then slow right down in third before dropping to first (or just stopping in third).

Some of the gearbox refurbishing companies retro-fit a drain plug for obvious reasons. You are one of the lucky ones .
I have never seen a type 9 with a drain plug.

I retro-fitted a filler cap to the top cover on mine to make life easier when filling but draining is still a PITA.
