Coming from the world of old Land rovers I was rather surprised to see the recommended use of the same grade of oil in the gearbox as the engine, just seems wrong not to put ep90 in a gearbox!
Is this still deemed correct or do folk use something else in the gearbox?

The same oil, we keep things simple! We don't have any gauges either, just a couple of small warning lamps in the speedo head. Although some folk do like to complicate things.

I think the forces in a Landy gearbox are probably a lot higher than in a Minor gearbox.
What surprised me when I first heard many years ago is the Mini gearbox running in the same oil as the engine.

The diff , I hope and trust , still languishes in a nice bath of ep90

And that is why I spent many an apprentice year repairing/overhauling early Mini gearboxes. Latterly the gearboxes were improved and became more reliable.

I recall something on early mini boxes Phil, I think it was to do with baulk rings or the absence of them? My box rebuilds were on a post 64 type. I remember those double centre bearings!

Just beware the sidevalve cars must have EP 90 unless I'm mistaken.

It's a 1098 motor so I'll be picking up some 20 50 from the local motor factors today, sadly have lost 2 old fashioned type car spare shops in the last year or 2 round here

Not any ol' EP90 though. You'll destroy the yellow metal in it.

Make sure it's from one of the minor suppliers. I think it needs to be GL4, but best to check first.

Good point you make re ep90, having run old Landrovers I am aware of the GL4 malarkey
