Post by olderisbetter »

Going through some bits today and found a used water pump, its A series but cast iron with a casting number of 12G1772 and he impeller has a casting number 12G1773 it looks in good condition and turns free and does not have any play, i have only ever seen cast aluminium ones, anyone know what it is?

As far as I remember, all Minor 1000s had cast iron water pumps originally. The alloy ones are later replacements I think.
Some owners prefer to have their cast iron ones reconditioned for originality. I did on my Mini.

Many Minors is correct in saying that the original Minor and other vehicles using the trusty 'A' Series were fitted with the cast iron body and impellor water pump.
Original Pt No: 2A579 superseded by Pt No:2A774/12G129.
The later 'A' Series engines were fitted with the alloy water pump body and can still be obtained with either a cast impellor or pressed steel impellor.

I believe even on my latter day (1965) model the original water pump was cast iron.
At 93000 miles it was original but one of the first things to be replaced.
There was precious little wear on the bearing but the impeller and body were well past their sell by date.
