Midget Manifold and Alloy Inlet

When I did fitted the 12G940 head I used a Mini combined manifold so I could fit the 1 1/2" SU, but the exhaust outlet was only 1 1/4" so I had to reduce the neck of the new exhaust I fitted - which defeated the object of the exercise somewhat. I already had a Mini Spares ally inlet and recently bagged a bargain Midget exhaust manifold off eBay so I was running out of excuses

So I spent a bit of time fiddling.
Midget manifold cleaned up and painted
In place with modified down pipe
A new cast clamp is on the way to replace the crappy pressed steel thing
PCV fitted to cut down servo take-off pipe
Not taken him for a run yet as the engine wouldn't start, turned out to be the bullet connection pulled out on the wiring to the electronic dizzy. When he did start engine sounded well with no leaks but may need to adjust things with the new manifold and re-positioning of the PCV.

I don't get why that manifold exit is not pointing rearward for better gas flow, rather than bending forward, are they really like that on a Midget?

The Midget/Sprite exhaust manifold is set in that forward cant because if it was further back (as per the Minor) it would not allow the exhaust pipe to pass through the hole in the chassis. The N/S foot well being where it is does not help either.

There is one that points rearwards but I doubt whether there would be the room to get the pipe through the hole - and I think it was a smaller bore for earlier cars.

I'm interested to see you have not water heated the inlet manifold. Let us know if when the winter comes it gives any icing problems, not long to wait now

The manifold is for the small bore 948cc Sprite Pt No:-12A191B and indeed faces rearwards in the style of a Minor exhaust manifold.
The 12A191 exhaust manifold was fitted to the 1098cc Sprite Midget.

Would like to see how it performs in what's left of the summer first

There's two camper vans in the way at the moment and a rather bad oil leak from the gearbox to sort out

Thanks for the manifold explanation, it looks to make an almost 90 degree bend with the pipe when fitted to a Minor, I presume the sweep has an easier bend on the Midget ?

The front exhaust pipe that matches the exhaust manifold above has a nice sweeping bend down through the chassis leg and onwards to the silencer

I tried one of those PCVs you have fitted and it blew up the first time I revved it (inlet vacuum very high?). Perhaps it was user/fitting error though.
Have a mini "emissions valve" style thing now.

Crikey, it's just a dead weight non-return valve can't think why it blew up

I've been looking for a Mini one but they're a hell of a price.

Thanks Phil, the Jeep one is working very well but I could be tempted
Made up an exhaust steady bracket, just need the cast clamp to finish the job off[frame]

Panky, the manifold looks great. What paint did you use?

Thanks
Primed it with etch then a coat of high temperature enamel, not sure how long it will last but it looks nice for now. I've got some barbeque paint somewhere, I might try that if this stuffs burns off.

After a couple of weeks faffing about with gearboxes Ted has finally made it back onto the road
While he was languishing in the garage the cast clamp exhaust arrived so I got rid of the pressed steel one.
So today was the first chance I got to try the new manifolds out and it's a big success, he fair whips along

Before he would pull fine up to about 3500 revs but struggle to get beyond 4000 - now he will rev cleanly up to 5500 and keeps going, and that's pulling a 3.7 final drive, but I chickened out as It's only a standard 1098 with a 1275 Cooper head and I didn't want to break anything. Most chuffed

Is that Midget manifold a bigger diameter inside than the standard Minor one.
Sounds like she is running very well after your work on it, well done.

Thanks, it's running very well
The Midget manifold outlet is bigger than the Minor item, 1 1/2" as opposed to 1 1/4". Doesn't sound much but it certainly makes a difference
