Is it worth used a new 3 pin relay in stead of the flasher unit?
If so where does XPL go in relation to 49 49a 31 terminals?

Relay markings
X = 49 ( or + ) Power in
P ( or R ) = Warning light
L = 49a ( or C ) Flashing signal out
Earth = 31 ( or K or - )
The metal cylindrical Flasher cans are usually "earthed " through the fixing screw to the body work.

P ? As quoted in my first post.
Second listing on the Relay markings list.
P ( or R ) = Warning light
The P stands for " panel light ". And before you ask , I've never been able to find an explanation for the " R " designation.
Has anybody got the answer to that one please ? I'm always willing to learn.

Cheers Bob
Been having problems trying to get a NOS flasher unit seems newer versions are likely to cause issues. That's why was looking at a 3 pin modern relay any advice welcome

A 'relay' is not a 'flasher unit' -it doesn't flash....... Stick to the normal electrical spec for the vehicle....

If you want to avoid the new Lucas ( allegedly ) round cans , then for a 12volt negative earth car substitute , you could try a Durite 0-744-22 (which will cope with 2/4 x 21w traditional bulbs ). It would be different for an LED light set up.
On Ebay , the AGM advert lists these at £9.63 with free postage. It goes on to list a vast number of other car manufacturers / electrical suppliers equivalent code numbers for similar flasher relays. Helpful , if you wanted to visit the local breakers yard
to source the replacement.
The traditional 3 pin cans from Ring ( is it FL4 code from memory *) are quite adequate and cheaper from an Agricultural Merchants , if you have one near by. Farmers don't like paying over the odds !
Standard disclaimer , I have no connections with the parties mentioned. I endorse Roy's view about sticking with the normal spec. I also respect your choice in the matter. Your vehicle , your money , your choice , your decision.
Hope this helps.
Bob
* Correction RFL4 memory is not what it use to be !

Hi Russ
Branch spares have sold quite a few of the SWT122 Lucas (pos or neg earth) flasher cans (from ESM) £9 I think? One or two of the cheaper ones have found their way back, (dead) however.

To be fair, the 'flasher unit' is just a relay and a small capacitor.

So is it necessary to have a relay with a Lucas FL5 can? I can't remember the wiring diagrams including relays and the flasher can is rated at 42w.

No ...you don't need a relay to operate a Lucas FL5 can. It will work quite efficiently on it's own.

NO relays! The can flashers have points and a bi-metal arrangement which heats and cools- so breaking and making the circuit causing the flash. These go on 'for ever'unless perhaps abused by being shorted, or also asked to flash 'trailer' lights. They also won't work with silly LED bulbs----since the current flow is not high enough to heat the bi-metal.
