Fuel pump problem

Hi. For the first time in 6 years my little Moggy let me down on the road at a 4 way junction. After laying for 10 mins it started. Got 1/4 mile ahead then stopped again. It was at this point I hear the fuel pump frantically pumping and the car starts. Exact same again it stops and the pump once again pumps frantically. Made it home by accelerating slowly. Is It a new pump or can I do anything with my own !!!
Thanks Ronnie

First of all check the built in filter on the pump, it's under a hexagon headed plug on the pump body, and see if there's any debris. It could also be fuel vaporisation in the heat of the engine bay sometimes caused by an after market in-line filter, if you have one then get rid of it. I had a similar problem a few years ago and dumping the filter sorted it
Once that's done do a pump flow test by disconnecting the fuel line at the carb, put the end of the pipe into a clean container and switch the ignition on - you should get a couple of pints in a minute.

Will do panky. There's no inline filter. Is there internal points that may need cleaned or adjusted ??

The filters in the pump. Yes it has points in it.

If it's ticking away then the points should be OK, the constant clattering of the pump is usually caused by fuel not getting to it so it cant build up any pressure. Another thing to check is if the petrol tank is pulling a vacuum, if the problem starts again take the fuel filler cap of and see if it sucks air in as you remove it.

If loosening the fuel cap works you might solve the problem by drilling a tiny hole in it.

Hi. Today is the first time I've got back to the problem. I've taken the pump off. When connected to a battery the points click frantically. When I connect it to the fuel system it slows down dramatically but pumps fuel. I don't know how much fuel it should be pumping. Any suggestions ??

Pump sounds ok. Fuel supply might be the problem?

Pint in two minutes will be good.
