Clutch relay rod alignment

Hi
I have just spent a couple of hour fitting new clutch operating linkage.
The relay shaft went in good and I replaced the old pedal to relay rod(948 model) with the two plates.
All ok and a nice fit. I then fitted the relay rod from the shaft to the clutch lever. The two don't line up that well.
However, when I depress clutch pedal the rod at the clutch fork end seems to bend slightly because of the angle.
Is the hole in the relay shaft too tight for the rod. There is not a lot of movement there. Also was the original relay shaft fitted
To the 948 different to the later one. It is almost as if the arm on the relay shaft extends to far towards the gearbox and causes the alignment of the relay rod to the clutch fork to be out.
Any help please would be appreciated.
