Clutch relay rod alignment

Hi
I have just spent a couple of hour fitting new clutch operating linkage.
The relay shaft went in good and I replaced the old pedal to relay rod(948 model) with the two plates.
All ok and a nice fit. I then fitted the relay rod from the shaft to the clutch lever. The two don't line up that well.
However, when I depress clutch pedal the rod at the clutch fork end seems to bend slightly because of the angle.
Is the hole in the relay shaft too tight for the rod. There is not a lot of movement there. Also was the original relay shaft fitted
To the 948 different to the later one. It is almost as if the arm on the relay shaft extends to far towards the gearbox and causes the alignment of the relay rod to the clutch fork to be out.
Any help please would be appreciated.
Ty

See BMC wksp manual Section EE.4 for details of the relay shaft fitment.
From car No: 198690 cars were fitted with a modified relay shaft and increased diameter operating rod (5/16").
The 5/16" operating rod fitted into the other side (N/S) of the relay shaft lever. See Fig EE.3.
The earlier operating rod (1/4") fitted into the O/S of the relay shaft lever. See Fig EE.2.
It may be that you have simply fitted the operating rod to the wrong side of the relay shaft lever.

Still trying to line things up.
However, I have fitted the spring between the engine backplate and the clutch fork. Where does the pedal return Spring go please. I can see nowhere to fit it either to the clutch pedal or body.
Help would be welcome thanks.

There is no actual pedal return spring.
The clutch pedal is returned by the spring that is fitted between the clutch release arm/fork and the engine back plate.
The brake pedal has a return spring that fits inside the chassis leg under the master cylinder cover.

When I fitted the kit on mine last year, the relay shaft assembly did not seem terribly well made, the lugs that the linkage attach to seemed to have been welded on where they first touched. I had to do some adjustment to them so things fitted in line without putting strain on things. All working well though now, I also put a poly bush in the chassis rail side.
