mastic seal?

Post by rupert »

Hi Everyone,
I'm restoring/replacing the gutter on my 1962 4 door and was wondering what Mastic was? The morris minor restoration manual (which is very good) has explained how to make the gutters and fit them and then it says "seal with Mastic", is this like silicone? I would would rather not use silicone as it needs to have a coat of paint on top and this usually causes problems.

I even went to the Zoo, but we couldn't find any mastic seals there either!

thanks

Rupert

"seal with Mastic",
The gutter sealer is going to be a difficult one to get right!
You can get a number of overpaintable mastic sealers, but most of these will shrink back over a few years. You need one with a high filler content (half way inbetween mastic and car body filler) that still remains a good bonding agent...
And I don't know where you'd get it :-(

how about this?

http://www.paints4u.com/ProductDetails. ... uctID=1611

it says its flexible and overpaintable?

Not too sure whether it shrinks or not

I just did a google on this and it seems to be ok for boats too...

That Mastic mentions 'aluminium, glass, wood...' but not steel, and also requires primer, so maybe not the one at a guess.

It could be worth giving someone like ESM a call as they restore cars as well as supply parts.
Cheers
