Remanufactured engine needed

Hello,

My 1957 four door saloon needs a "new" engine. It seems to be very difficult to get a remanufactured 948cc one. So i'm thinking of putting a 1098cc one in. Would clutch, gearbox and cylinder head fit on both models?

Does anybody here know a trustable manufacturer? I would also buy a used engine if it was in excellent condition. What should I consider?

I found this one on ebay: http://www.ebay.de/itm/262531550882?_tr ... EBIDX%3AIT What do you think about the offer?

I live in Hamburg, Germany. A friend of mine goes to Britain several times a year and could pick up the part.

Thanks and regards,

Frank

If your 948 can be rebuilt I'd go for that. I swapped mine for a 1098 which has a bit more power but lacks the character of the original engine. Definitely doesn't fart as well as the original! Depends how you use the car really.

Of course, the 948 could be rebuilt. My trusted mechanic, educated on Austin in the 1960s, would do the job for 1400 Euros. I'm sure, the work would be perfect. But that's the price I paid for the whole car ten years ago.

I will post a search advert for a 948 in this forum.

Why not putting a 1098 in a 1957 model? Is the sound really different? Which engine is more solid? What is important to compare?

I will use the Minor as the only car for a family in a big town where you don't need one. We do almost everything by bike and bus. The car will be stored dry and will run about 5000 miles a year.

Yes you can fit the 1098 engine in place of the 948 but believe it or not the 948 is a sweeter engine and the power not that much different but at the end of the day the choice is yours. If driving in towns mostly the 948 is ideal.

Don't forget, you'll probably need the ribbed-case 1098cc gearbox to match the extra torque of the 1098cc engine, plus matching clutch/flywheel, etc. Then, you should also uprate the front brakes to 8" drum 1098cc spec., as the little 7" 948cc drums will probably struggle to stop you.

Personally, I would be tempted to bore out the original 948cc engine to 998cc or thereabouts (as per Mini spec.)

Thanks for your answers so far! I think, I will look for a 948 one then. I already placed a search advert in this forum.

Does anybody know, where to get an engine in the Netherlands, Denmark or even Germany instead?

If your friend comes to England several times a year perhaps he could collect a new engine from a supplier on your behalf to save the shipping costs?
