Morris Minor Owners Club

Can anyone provide more info more about these supposedly rare cars fitted with a 1098 engine from new (whilst all others were fitted with 803's?). Never heard about this one before, and I've read most of the Morris books!

I knew about the 948cc S11s, perhaps this is what the vendor means(?).

Easy to check via the chassis plate - eng no quoted - but ensure typeface punches are correct.

Sorry -'it just can't be true, as the 1098 wasn't even built until 1962 ((if memory serves) and the last Series IIs were built in 1956. It just isn't true, whether the vendor thinks it is or not.

I think it may be the case that whilst the engine is an original Morris Minor engine, it won't have been fitted to your car from new.
Though it may be the case that it was fitted as a replacement for your worn out original at a Morris dealership, which is where the story of it being fitted by Morris themselves may have originated from.
I take it has a 'ribbed' gearbox attached to it.

It can be no more than a "story" can it. We all know that the 1098cc engine simply didn't exist at that stage.
Even the (very few) Series11 cars which the factory fitted with 948cc engines were experimental and none were sold new to the public.

Sometimes people have been told something by a previous owner which they decide must be correct......

People who are selling things sometimes, after many years, simply don't remember all the facts - and sometimes, maybe, it suits them to "embellish" them a little?

PS, I don't think it is Andy (XWL 61) who is the owner of this mismatched car advertised for sale.

He, as a long-term and experienced Series11 owner is only asking if anybody thinks it is a likely story

I'm not convinced, as he refers to others not bothering to update the DVLA records, doesn't he? I suspect it's a genuine mistake, and it doesn't really matter in terms of the sale I guess, but it just isn't possible (unless BMC had a time machine!).

I know he says that it is stated in the log book (which he hasn't shown in the listing) but it wouldn't have been possible to purchase even a 948cc Minor new in 1955 let alone a 1098cc one.

It would be possible to "date" the engine from the engine number if anyone could be bothered to ask the seller. Also, a Heritage certificate should provide details of the cars original specification of course.

I wouldn't ever spend 15K on a Morris Minor, - in fact I don't think I have spent that much in over 30 years of minoring - spares, servicing and cars!!

Doesn't he say that the £15,000 was just on parts alone ?
All that money and he still has the wrong (late Minor 1000) wings all round and the rear seat from a 4door model

That's what people do when they haven't paid the extra for a reserve price on the auction and, a day or so before the end they realize it isn't going to achieve their expectations. They can't do that during the final 12hours so the have to either end the auction before that OR get their mate to place bids and risk him winning and them paying the commission It only got to about £800 didn't it? I didn't think he was likely to accept that!

I agree, £15,000 on parts alone One or two parts suppliers must be happy! It would be interesting to see the receipts - AND the car's original log book with the 1098cc engine reference.

I did challenge the seller about the 1098 engine etc, and shortly after it was 'sold'. When a seller starts to 'make up' (or 'embellish' if you prefer) impossible facts like that - you do need to wonder about the rest of the description...and the car.
