Grinding noise from rear?

Suspect it's coming from the nearside rear hub, and hoping it's not the diff. Happens in all gears and is most noticeable when driving through town where the sound can reverberate off walls/fences. Recently changed the hub seal (needed doing anyway) and hoped this would solve it but no luck. The bearing seemed fine while I had it out. Also discovered yesterday that the noise goes away when steering left, even slightly.
Any suggestions for a remedy?
Cheers in advance

It sounds like the differential part (sun and planet gears) of the crown wheel and pinion assy is on its way out.

As a first stab, I woud suggest it is likely connected to your recent repair, and not the differential. Refrain from using util sorted, as it may be a serious safety risk. Faili that, Phil would be on the money.

Grasping at straws but maybe just the drum rubbing on the backplate or something wrong with the brake shoe positioning. ? But odd that it would go away on steering left. As above - did you disturb the rear wheel bearing? Maybe in wrong way round - or damaged during the seal replacement.
