How important is this certificate that some people have issued to their cars and how does one go about checking the MOT history of a possible future purchase?

Here is the link for MOT history it only goes back to 2005 and all you need is the registration number and the vehicle make.

As for the heritage certificate it all depends on how interested you are in the cars history and/or originality. The main information contained is the vehicle numbers such as chassis, body, engine, gearbox ect., it can also provide information on which dealership the car was delivered too. So it really depends if you think the price of a certificate (currently £42) justifies the information that you may get.

The certificate also shows the original body colour & trim. You can't get one for Adderley Park built Minors though as the factory records were destroyed.

Some Minors are down as 'Rover' on the DVLA database so maybe try entering that in the 'make' box rather than Morris.

For £5 you can apply to DVLA for the history . I don't know how far it goes back . I did it for a 1985 car and got photocopies of all the info they have on the car and previous owners . My car showed it had had four previous registration numbers .

When I went to DVLA for information on my 1956 minor I was able to go back to when the car was first registered.

I think you can go along to Heritage and look up your car history for free. Whether or not you can then print off a 'Certificate' I have no idea.. But not too difficult to make up your own I guess.
