Proof of Ownership and Registration

A few years back I posted a message about my Dad's Traveller which has been languishing in his garage since the late 1970s. He wanted to sell it but has been put off by the fact that the registration has never been recorded with the DVLA (which didn't exist when it was last driven), and in the intervening years he's mislaid the ownership documents.
Can anyone on here help him make some sense of what to do? The DVLA don't have any record of the car and he can't find the documentation proving he owns it. The car is complete etc, just hasn't been on the road since 1978. This can't be a unique situation as there are always barn finds showing up...this is just a 'garage find'!
Once he's happy he has proof of ownership he'll probably sell it. It needs restoration underneath although the wood is ok.
Cheers and thanks in advance for any help,
Rich

I bought a French van , that had never been registered in th UK . I had no paper work with it at all . I got a letter from the Renault club to state what year it was based on the chassis number . I got it motd and dvla gave me a regististration number and log book with this information . In theory I had nothing really to prove I owned it other than a receipt I got from the seller and he didn't even have that .
It caused me no issues and I later sold the van .

I assume the registration number is known - and the chassis number is on the bulkhead plate? So just apply for the V5c and see where that takes you !

Last used - taxed & tested - in 1978, won't be on their computer to permit them to issue a current V5c.
Gather all the ID numbers and contact Rob Thomasson - could go for a BMIHT HC if going that route - if you've any old family pics of the car all the better.

Surely then DVLA will just issue an age related number - their fault if they haven't bothered to keep track of it on the computer. A few pictures of the car as it used to be - and as it is now would certainly help I suppose. No old Tax discs tucked in/behind the gloveboxes? As far as I can see - no-one bothers about 'proof of ownership' these days - when we see so many obviously scam/wrong age /wrong shell cars floating across the ebay sea...... not to mention Reg Documents ...... And no-one bothers about them.....

V5c records the "keeper" of the vehicle, who actually "owns" it is irrelevant.
Not difficult to do if prepared to take time doing some investigating - providing all the numbers match - just need, as Roy says, tax discs/old pics and Bob's your mum's sisters' husband!

I think matching numbers are irrelevant . DVLA will just register the chassis / engine number that is on the car .I think you will need proof (letter from this club) of approximate date of manufacture. I suspect the old reg number will be lost . It was very easy for me to do .
