Spray painting white domestic doors

Has anyone tried spray painting interior white doors - with Satin finish Dulux paint I hasten to add. SWMBO wants all the doors freshened up (11 of them - 2 sides each of course) and painted - and it's a brush painting nightmare. I would of course be doing it outdoors , nice warm day, doors horizontal etc etc... Unfortunately I don't have a spare door to practice on -but will try on a bit of wood. Any suggestions how much to thin the paint -what to use as thinner for a reasonably fast drying time ? Any/all advice very welcome. Thanks in advance! Roy

hi roy.. painted some doors for my late father with a gloss roller,
used dulux thinned with white spirit. quite quick and easy...
also rolled my doors when first moved in many years ago
and thinned with petrol

Hmmm - well with the inset paneling I think the roller may not be ideal - although I had thought of it. Thanks for the input - I think I will however avoid the petrol...

One of the problems with trying to use gloss paint in a spray gun is you have to thin (white spirit) it down quite a bit to get it to flow and in doing that it goes on very thin so does not cover very well and of course runs easily as it takes longer to dry. Someone I know tried it years ago and had mixed results and I decided then I would not bother.

I sprayed all the radiators in my house with gloss and satin oil based paints that are the same as the wall colour, even matched the tiles in the bathrooms with gloss. I usually thin about 10% with white spirit, depending on your gun setup i would experiment with the quantity. How will you do both sides, one side at a time let dry and then flip over to do the other side. How about a jig from angle/box iron to mount doors vertical and then do both sides at once may take longer as smaller number done at one time.I had a jig so that the door could be mounted horizontal via the hinges on a long timber in a workmate bench and a prop in the lock hole which held it flat then use support in lock hole to flip door over for other side but was only doing on door at a time Oh and wait for all the bugs, flies, green flies, midges, to be attracted to your lovely doors in the sun.Leave the doors over night before touching them.I think you can buy an accelerator to add to oil based paint to speed things up. I do have a 3hp compressor and use a devilbiss gravity gun, setup for two pack paint, as i repair and spray cars for a living.
Good luck
Regards Ian

Thanks all for advice. I sprayed a door today using a 'satin white' aerosol - worked well, dried quickly. But it's not an economic proposition - the cost of the aerosols is mighty - and it would need a can for each side. It's the drying time with the Dulux paint that will be a nuisance - but I guess next one will be wee roller + brush -and hope the flies stay away.... may just do them where they hang - obviously that wasn't possible with the spraying..... Thanks again -all advice appreciated.

I do a lot of painting and always use Dulux trade paint, Toolstaion.com have good prices on satin and i put it on with a Maxin mini blue gloss roller and a Maxin 50 mm cutting edge angle brush, But and gloss roller will be ok, i prep with contour pads for awkward shaped doors and edges, and i prime with Leyland quick drying acrylic primer under coat. I have sprayed it on before with a HVLP spray gun thinned with white spirits or water if water based paint, The water based/quick drying trade dulus is ok but i only use it where i don't want paint smells.

I've tried spraying gloss befor- i had to mix it with plenty of white spirit and it still didn't flow great from the gun, and it didn't cover very well either.
I would reccomend you roller and brush the doors with your deluxe gloss.
If you are still intent to use a gun, then why not go to your local car paint and spares shop- they can mix you up some 2k (for wood) that's what we use when spraying bespoke furniture- it will give you better coverage, better finish, and shouldn't be much more than a tin of deluxe!

I spray quite a few doors in position on houses using an earlex HVLP kit, they seem to spray much thicker paint i use about 10% white spirit and get hardly any misting, I also use it for red lead and grey primers on projects.
