How do take the door glass off the lift channel ? It looks like it is sandwiched between a rubber strip and may tap off ?

Yes, it should tap out with a wooden mallet, if you take care...............

How do you get to that stage? I am trying to do same and also remove door lock mechanism.
I have removed 3 grommets, removed the three bolts.
I have undone two more in the middle of the door panel securing the hinge side runner.
Removed two nuts from studs under the quarter light.
There is a small self tapper which I have taken out.
The glass runners pull up a certain amount but seem to get caught on something by the door lock.
Do I have to remove the bolts securing the window winder as well?
Manual says something about disconnecting the quadrant but it does not seem to want to part company.
Any help welcomed ...

If you have removed all the bolts etc holding the frame in position, then you should be able to wind the window up until you can slide the arm or lever of the winding mechanism out of the channel in which it sits. You may have to loosen the bolts on the winder mechanism to facilitate this but I don't think you have to remove it (its been a long time since I did this job!)
