Witter tow bar kit for Morris Minor

Post by mickeytwonames »

I have come across a boxed 'never been opened' Witter tow bar kit for Morris Minor that's 40 years old.
I tow a trailer and have a 'custom' solution fitted but feel the kit may make a better solution
Does anyone have any experience of fitting one?

Yes. I fitted one to our 1952 years ago and it was simple to do. Incidentally, the Minor towbar was the first one that Witter produced, according to their company history. I tow a 300kg aeroplane fuselage with it (Slowly!) but much more weight would need some additional structure. The boot floor isn't really designed with towbars in mind.

Whilst of good quality and design, you may find your custom one to be as good. This one hangs from the 2 cast extensions that go out to the bumper iron so it relies on the strength of those cast arms plus a fabricated box-section extension in the middle that runs below the middle of the boot floor.

Are you fitting to a Saloon or a Traveller? The bars were different. The saloon fitment involves drilling through the bumper spring and blade. Cast shaped blocks then fit either side of the blade to support the towball. The Traveller one moves the number plate. Both attach to the bumpoer supports and the boot floor.

My old Dixon Bate was a far superior tow bar then with good strong angled structures running forward each side to the chassis'legs' . Towed my 'racing' Mini on a heavy trailer all over Ecosseland - and never slowly....... I regret scrapping it with the car, back in the day when Minors were just dumped -there wasn't much wrong with it - today it would have been an 'easy project'  The test of a good tow bar is -can you happily jump up and down on it - big jumps - once you have installed it? Remember - once you install a tow bar, it and the structure all around becomes MOT inspected, and the electrics must be correctly wired and pass the 'test plug' which they use.
