Currently recommenced restoring my 1960 Traveller after a wee break. Working in the engine bay prior to respraying it and re-installing mechanics. Slight "lumpy" bit on the bulkhead to the left of the battery tray which I couldn't understand, but now realised that it is where the body/chassis number USED to be stamped! It's been welded over and then ground down to obliterate it. Goodness knows when as the vehicle has been owned by me for at least twenty five years!!! I had it on the road when I first acquired it and all was well!
Anyway, I would be very grateful if one or two people would post a photograph or two of their bulkhead with numbers stamped in so that I can cut the old bit out and weld in a new wee patch with the numbers stamped on properly as it should be.
I don't suppose anyone out there has the correct style of stamp to stamp it for me if I were to send a wee bit of steel down to them?
If you photograph your stamped bulkhead is there any chance you could please incorporate a ruler into the picture?

Does it have a body number, and are the running units the originals?

Doubt anyone on here will be willing to "re-stamp" a bodyshell chassis stamp knowing it is a dodgy vehicle.

I would contact BMIHT, requesting a chassis number be determined via body or drivetrain number.

I think that's dead right. Leave it alone. Any changes now would look dodgy.

Sounds like stolen/disguised car. Especially if someone has gone to that trouble. But so many years ago - no point worrying about it now. As above - the body number (small strip plate nearside at top of bulkhead) will reveal if it matches the supposed age of the car.

Not req for MOT for any pre 1980 cars, though not all MOT testers know that...
I once was questioned about lack of chassis plate on a 1960 Land Rover I once owned, so pulled the V5 out of my pocket and carefully wrote it on the bulkhead in black marker whilst he watched.... He said that wasn't acceptable, I said check his manual. Oh what fun we had....

Anyway for your problem just rely on the screwed on plate on the bulkhead. The stamped in number can be very difficult to read anyway...

All numbers - yet to check GB & RA ones - are a match for an October 1960 Traveller.

With the info supplied by Mr.C. the likely scenario is that it has been a multiple Cherished registration "mule".

I didn't know the 1980 law and I have been turned away from an MOT for not having a chassis plate twice !

Just make your own chassis plate !

He didn't say is hasn't got a chassis plate. Just that the "stamped in" number has been covered over. It won't make any difference to the MOT either way

Provided it is on the DVLA system, should be okay.
