Drain tap

Thank you for those who have been answering my novice's questions - here's another. I can see the drain tap at the bottom of the radiator, but I can't see one on the engine block. I'd expect to see it at the right hand side (facing the car) of the engine block since the left is crowded by the alternator and distributor. When I look at the diagram on p25 of a Haynes manual I see it right where I'd expect it at the back of the block, just under the rear block inspection cover. So where's my tap? At this location there is a hexagonal washer. Is that removed for draining the block or is it something else?

If it's horizontal - it's the access to the oil pump intake.... Later blocks don't have a drain tap. NEVER try to use the radiator drain tap....it may pull out of the rad - just take the bottom hose off.

By the way 246 is Morayshire I think - you volunteer at a heritage railway? I'm at the GCR.

All my 1098 blocks have a drain plug in place of the tap - cost saving by Morris Motors, and argu\bly more reliable too. The plug is in the same place as the tap would have screwed in. When undone it drains the blaock, but usually required a genlt prodding to dislodge crud and sluge that tends to accumulate there.

Well maintained radiator drain tape work fine. Later ones were nylon, but the butterly type with a tube in the centre allow you to fit a plastic tube and drain the coolant into a container rather than going all over the ground.

markandsue - yes Morayshire - latterly painted black ( ) now awaiting boiler overhaul (otherwise all good) at Bo'ness (SRPS) I was Fireman and Driver - until poor health struck a year ago. The upper small picture is me on 4MT 80105 - it's also awaiting a full overhaul - belongs to LOGS. Bo'ness currently has no large Loco - struggle along with 2 Austerities, which run very well - but are they what the public really wants to see???
Morayshire - I'm the Driver here, but I preferred to be the Fireman.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqkNaS5vhRI and then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-tifIZtFFM
