Tailshaft oil seal replacement

I need to replace the gearbox tailshaft oil seal on my Morris (fitted with a ribbed-case Spridget gearbox) but I can't seem to find the job detailed in any of my manuals.

Is it a difficult job? Could the seal be replaced with the gearbox in situ (from above or below) or does it have to come out? Do I need any whizzy extractors or presses? And how many more grey hairs will the job give me?!

Tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if this is something that might be covered in the Minor factory workshop manual? (If so, does anyone have a good one for sale?)

Thanks all.

I am pretty sure you will soon get some in depth advice here from those more experienced that me and my gearbox is the standard 1098 ribbed one but...

The rear oil seal with its original felt bush seal and the more modern "rubber" oil seal ist simply chiselled off as carefully as possible to avoid damaging the alu shaft and the new one simply :o pressed /lightly hammered home.

However, this is not always the culprit for oil leaks - that is the brass bush which Needs removing with a Special tool and the new one"cold shrunk" into Position.

I have read here however, that others have had Problems with the prop shaft not Fitting properly afterwards.

We are not allowed to provide a direct link, but if you need a Morris Minor Workshop Manual, Google will usually list a free download for you - it's the 14th Edition dated 1970 and covers all models from MM to 1098 Minor 1000. The site has a bit of a 'fishy' name!

This subject (tail seal) comes up so often - it would be good if someone would do a 'sticky' on it.

Thanks for the workshop manual tip - went fishing on Google and hooked it right away!

I'll replace the oil seal to start with and see what happens.
