body changes and parts

Post by olderisbetter »

I have had a quick search but cannot find information on the changes like when the plastic type front indicators came in, i am looking for a way to tell model changes and what year they came in.

The later, larger, orange indicator lights were introduced in October 1963. Their fitment is not a very good guide to the age of a particular car because, for many years the only front wings readily available have had the mounting for these later lights so many owners of earlier cars have fitted the later lights when replacing front wings.

The later lights were introduced at the same time as the tandem windscreen wipers (replacing the clap-hands type). Although it is possible to fit these to an earlier car it is much more involved and unlikely to have been altered so this is a better guide to a car's age.

Thanks thats good guidance as i was trying to understand the indicators as i was trying to work out why a pre 60's car had the larger indicators but it does have the clap hands wipers and also just noticed trafficators on the rear quaters as its a 2 door.

The majority of Morris Minors originally equipped with trafficators had flashing indicators fitted to them later on for safety reasons - the trafficators not being noticed by many other roadusers! It is great fun to retain them of course and perfectly possible to have both trafficators AND flashers :)

Don't forget that, after all this time, many older cars have been fitted with new wings, which had openings for the later, bigger indicators which were then fitted. An old car may have had a number of non-original parts fitted during its lifetime now.

Yes i'm finding that, my 58 traveller has fibreglass rear wings , i have metal ones now just deciding when to fit them, and it has a electric washer pump made by cosmic, looks like a 1970's type item.
