Damper Oil?

Post by Bantam »

Hi Folks,
Could anyone PLEASE help me with what type of damper oil on my 1956 Minor.
I have been unable to find SAE 20 or SAE 40 as we only have Jolly old Halfords locally.
I have found SAE 30 hydrolic oil though, could anyone tell me if this is ok to use on my 'old style' dampers please.
Thanks in anticipation.

Pretty sure it will be but you can get SAE30 engine oil from garden centres, it's used in motor mowers and it's a vast improvement on the original oil :)
I used 30 in the front and 40 in the rear on my traveller, got the SAE40 really cheap on ebay and actually got the 30 from the gardening isle in Tesco

Definitely not 3 in 1 ..... :o  SAE 40 is highly recommended - ebay has plenty, or Machine Mart. The difference in the ride will amaze you - best to flush the horrible old oil a couple of times for good results.

2, litre bottles will fill all 4 and have some left over. You will waste some flushing out the old oil that's in them.
When I repaired and refilled mine I used methylated spirits to clean them as they had a layer of gunk over the internals.

Not alot. Buy a litre that will be enough to flush and fill the dampers.

I wouldn't have used meths.... Just a double flush with the SAE 40 and much pumping..... Machine Mart or ebay - just 1 litre is PLENTY.

Damper oil is individual to the carb. No one grade will suit every carb if you want the best from your engine.

Welcome aboard Adrian - assuming it really is you..... Exactly - it's a matter of setting up what you want with needle/spring/oil. The 'Works' used EP90 in the Rally Cooper S carbs - to stop the pistons bumping up and down on the rough stages.

Sorry for a simple question
Is it SAE40 or SAE10w40 , or is there not much difference .
Thanks
