Well I'm glad you got the lack-of-petrol problem sorted. What was it (empty tank or air getting into fuel line)?
As for fires but doesn't run, the first thing to do is clean up the spark plugs with a wire brush. I'd stopped bothering to do that as a first hit on a non-starter but learnt my lesson in January after wasting an hour trying to get Sid started; He ran 1st time straight on the key after I'd cleaned the plugs

Gonna try puting a new fuel pipe from pump to carb as think it is leaking
Gonna just do general check and fiddle

If you don't explain what's wrong - we can't help.

Has a similar problem with the Volvo. The engine fired once and then refused, there were sparks getting to all the right places at the right time and petrol was flowing.
Turned out to be a break in the low tension wire from the coil to the ignition switch. It wasnt a full break so occasionally fired the engine but then died.
A simple check is to use a bit of wire to connect the battery direct to the coil.
