it´s hard to see, but when there is another orange one on the opposite side, this could be the indicator controls.

No it's just the one light that comes on its own.

Oil filter warning maybe but some people customise their warning lamp positions.

On my car that's the oil pressure warning light. Does it go off when you start the engine?

I thought it was to do with the oil. It comes on when the car is idling. But it then overheats.

That light comes on as well as the ignition light when you switch on but should go out when the engine starts. It is same as my 1971 van. I used to have a 1968 A35 van with the same light and that came on once when I was driving along and it is the oil pressure light and I just changed the oil pressure switch which took less than five mins to replace and it went out once the engine was running.

The light comes on only when the car has overheated.

Does the red light below it flicker when the engine is idling too?

on some engine is a temp sensor located just above the generator in the cylinder head. Is this connected?
(on my car, sensor is in but not connected)
try pull off the cable , is the light still on when cable disconnected? If not, it is the water temp sensor saying it´s to hot.
the oil pressure sensor is on the same side beside the place where the oil line starts that goes to oil filter
do like above, pull off cable......
after that you will know if the light is for one of this functions

It is definitely showing that you have VERY low oil pressure. That's already been explained to you in another thread. It's nothing to do with temperature - except that the oil has become very hot and thin, and the pressure has fallen to dangerously low level. Fix the overheating and change the oil and filter - and you may be lucky and not see it again, when the engine is running.
